If the unfinished version is already this good!!... *nosebleed*
Well, I'd say anime and manga are pretty popular. Ever since the middle 90's, when 'Saint Seiya' was first aired here. There were anime on TV before ('Dragon Ball', 'Magic Knight Rayearth', 'Dragon Quest', 'Ribbon no Kishi', 'Speed Racer', etc.), but it was 'Saint Seiya' that brought foward the real boom on it! For 3 to 4 years ut was quite a fever! And many others anime followed along, since similar anime like 'Shurato', to 'Sailor Moon', 'YuYu Hakusho' and 'Captain Tsubasa' (even as a kid, I couldn't help but find ironical the the kids in the "Country of Soccer" were hooked on an anime about it!) XD
At the end of the 20th Century, though, anime were getting rarer and maybe the so-called "fever" were begining to decline. There were fewer anime anime on the open TV, and the gratest "hit" was 'Pokemon', so...
But it was around that time the a certain publisher realeased the first manga with right-to-left reading. For their first mangas they couldn't have made a safer bet: 'Dragon Ball' and 'Saint Seiya', the two most popular and memorable anime ever aired on Brazilian TV. 'Saint Seiya' wasn't aired anymore, but 'Dragon Ball Z' had just started running on cable.
I still remember my first one! I saw it on the new stand and had no idea of what it was. I thought it was like an episode guide (what I don't really care for) or something of the sort. You see, since the standard here is that the cover be on the left (left-to-right reading), and at the same time the reading was right-to-left, braziliang manga have twin covers on both sides, and ot top of that it was inside a plastic (because it's to violent to "brazilian standers"), so I had no way to find out what it was unless I'd buy it. i'm kinda cheapo, but I bough, since it was 'Saint Seiya' related. I got home and opened and whas very happy to fina out it was a manga. Although I found it weird that on the manga it started on with what I remembered to be the end of first episode. I accidentally missed the warning page saying it was right-to-left! XD
At the third page I noticed that there was something "very weird", as the actions seemed to be like "rewinding tape", that's when I remembered that the japanese originals are read right-to-left, I went all the way to the "last page" and there was a message saying to read right-to-left. I remember reading it throughly. It was long (compared to brazilian kiddy comics) and my first time reading like that gave me one hell of a headache! But I reaaaaaalllllly ENJOYED!! XD
Soon afterwards other manga were released: 'Rurouni Kenshin', 'CardCaptor Sakura', 'Magic Knight Rayearth', 'Shaman King', 'YuYu Hakusho'... Mostly mangas that were already popular on TV. When the manga standard was firm enough they started releasing manga that weren't known from TV, like 'Love Hina' (one of my favourites!), probably one of the top seller mangas that were released here.
Now they can even release mangas like 'GRAVITATION', what would be unthinkable a decade ago!
Now there are more mangas than I can ever buy!! lol
It's a pity I can't get them all (no puns intented! XD), but it's good that there are so many options!
And I want many more to be released, since I hope to get a job as a translator myself eventually. I'm currently on the 2nd (of 4) year of Collage on Japanese-Portuguese at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University. Our teachers not always like that the students are a bunch of "otaku", but they admit that it's popularity considerably increased the number of students (unfortunelly the number of teachers isn't increasing!).
I'm currently collecting 'Berserk' (ALWAYS) and 'Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE' (whenever I have enough money, I go to a specialized store not far from my home to buy old issues, as I can't keep up with the release rythm). I also wanted to read 'Negima! Magister Negi Magi', but I don't have enough money... T_T
'Berserk' is one of my favourite manga and is currently on brazilian issue #30 (tankobon #15, as 1 brazilian issue is half an original tankobon).
I also have 'Rurouni Kenshin', 'CardCaptor Sakura', 'Love Hina' and 'Holy Avenger' (sole successuful "brazilian manga") colections complete. And am only 2 volumes away from completing 'Gravitation'! It's a pity that they're not releasing the 'REMIX' and 'MEGAMIX' series, though! XD
Well, one day, who knows! lol
I also have every issue of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' that was released.
Well, there you go. I hope not have bored you much... ^^;
I always get so worked up when talking about theese stuff! =P
One More Thing: If you haven't realized realized yet, when picking anime and manga, shota plays a major part in my decision! Yahiko, Shoran (Syaoran), Goku, Puck, Isidoro (Isidore), Negi, Loki, Shinji, Ed, Al, Dai, Kohaku, Ash (Satoshi), ALL the boys from Digimon, etc. lol
